Neutrophils are white cells that are specifically directed at bacterial infections.

Granulocytes (neutrophils are one type, eosinophils and basophils are others) generally fight infections (bacteria, parasites, fungi).

The absolute count is a good number to know, however the other results in the CBC (Complete Blood Count) would also be helpful to know. The percentage of neutrophils in the total white count and other white cell percentages would be good to know as well.

Despite some ideas to the contrary, lab results by themselves are NOT diagnostic.
They suggest certain disease processes may be at work, but cannot definitively diagnose a disease. They can, however, support or contradict a diagnosis that the doctor has already made.

Mildly elevated neutrophils can essentially be a result of physicial or emotional stresses and not related to any specific condition or disease process, when there are no concerning symptoms and all other lab values are normal.

What were the rest of your counts like?
