Never mind the test. ALL drivers should:

Never go around crossing gates. Never assume they are in working order, either. They have battery back-up for power failure but THEY ARE NOT FAIL-SAFE. Other conditions can arise to render them inoperative. Therefore, before crossing ANY tracks, protected, marked or otherwise:

Turn off the music;

Roll down the window,

Listen --- not just for the train whistle. In some areas, the engineers are prohibited from using the whistle. Really listen for the train.

Look! It is cheap and you don't have to roll the window down, even though to be safe you should.

Though rarely an option, STOP when you can, LOOK and LISTEN. If you want to be a dumb-***, that's fine, but you endanger many more lives in addition to your own when you get tagged. You can put that train in the ditch, possibly killing crew, passengers or general citizenry if your stupidity results in a major derailment of a freight train.

Even here in Nut-zo California, if you get caught disregrading crossing protection the penalty is comparable to 1st time drunk driving. And, if found guilty of train wrecking with loss of life, one can face the death penalty.

If the caution lights are flashing and the arms are down you should stop of course. But when approaching any railroad crossing,you should slow down, roll your window down, turn your radio down, no cell phone so you can here the trains whistle. Look both ways as you approach the crossing. Make sure no train is coming and continue on. Remember this at railroad crossings when in doubt stop look and listen.Good luck on your test....Show more

You don't have to stop for them unless the lights are blinking and the arms are coming down on you. If you taking your test to drive school bus you have to stop but other than that do not stop for them. Remember that you have to stop before the crosswalk not on the crosswalk and remember to turn on your signal 300 feet before a turn. Oh and I almost forgot this one when I took my test many moons (15) years ago. When you get in the car first adjust the seat to your position, then put on your seat belt, then adjust your mirrors. Make sure that you put on your seat belt before you start the car. If you start the car before you put on the seatbelt it will be an automatic failure. As soon as the gate goes down,STOP 15 ft before tracks,you'll see the hazzard lights while you approch the tracks,then slow to a complete stop,dont go over tracks until the hazzard lights are off and gate is lifted....Show more
