The father of my kids is currently incarcerated for violating his probation. he received his w-2 forms the day he was booked. I was planning to have his taxes done for him by someone I know but what should I do about his signature? Should I get him to give me power of attorney to sign his name, just to be on the safe side?

DO NOT SIGN HIS TAXES...again...DO NOT SIGN HIS NAME...he could turn around and hold you liable for his taxes or financial problems..I know this first hand..funny how trying to help out can cost you. Money causes lots of problems and makes people do funny things when they don't have it. They even turn on those that try to help.

Either that or take the completed forms to him to sign. Prison's make arrangements for IRS filings.

Cant you take the papers to him and have him sign them himself? Or have his lawyer handle his tax forms?
