I now have an Nvidia 8500 GT 512mb DDR2 PCI-E video card. I want to upgrade to the 8600 GT but I don't know which 8600 is better for performance. I know 512mb is more memory than 256mb but the 512 is DDR2 and the 256 is DDR3. Which one is the better of the two?

DDr3 256 MB. I asked this exact question a few eeks ago. Go with the DDr3 It is much much faster. Also dont upgrade yet. wait until the 8800GT has come down in price. although the 8600GT is a decent card. it is already slightly outdated. wait and hold on to you 8500GT until the price of 8800's drop. you'll get a huge jump on graphics for slightly more cash
I would say if you could save up a bit more go for the 8800GT, either 256Mb or 512Mb (512Mb ideally), these are the best out at the moment for price.
256Mb - £116 512Mb - £160

Other than that the 256Mb is the better, one its DDR3, two with the cheaper graphics cards you dont need high RAM. RAM holds textures when you play at high resolutions - Which you cant with a lower end graphics card.
RAM is a way of getting people to spend an extra £10 for the "Its higher so its better" factor.
if your GeForce FX5200 is PCI-e, or in case you have a PCI-e slot, then you somewhat're effective! different improvements you will possibly be able to prefer in case you replace your motherboard: * capability grant * RAM * CPU * New OS licence (once you're presently utilising an aftermarket Licence for domicile windows)
