If I were to go to a furniture showroom (ex.Wickes) could I get the salesperson to knock down the price?

depends on the salesperson.......they usually do have leeway in lowering prices, but dont expect more than about a 15% reduction. they will get a lower comission if they do, but are sometimes willing to do it in order to make a higher number of sales. it really depends on the commission structure and store policy. Id definitely give it a try and if they wont come down, then just say "well thats a little more than im willing to spend right now, so I think i'll have to pass"......chances are they will call you back before you leave the store. Make sure you do a bit of browsing after you say it....so they have time to come and find you.......
My husband just can't believe the discounts I get. For furniture, your best bet for a discount is if you are going to be spending enough on the set to justify the discount. Markups on furniture are substantial. For example, I bought a pricey sofa, but if you bought a sofa the loveseat was half off. The price difference between a couch and loveseat is negligible. Obviously there was some wiggle room on the price and the store was bating the shopper into spending more - just to get a bargain. However, there was also a chaise with the set that I loved so I decided to buy it. No discount. I found an expensive bombay chest I loved and told the salesman, I will only buy the chaise if I can have that bombay chest for half off. He wanted the sale, so I got the discount. I still love that furniture. You have to play their game.
If its any place that works on commision, they are always willing to lower/discount the prices to make a sale, just you have to urge it on, if you dont say nothing they would be happy to make u pay full price. If they do work commision, say your intrested in that set but was wondering if that was they best price they could do for you.Hope it helps.
Retail furniture sales persons usually have no authority to adjust price. The manager may have the authority to adjust prices of floor models, damaged items, and discontinued models.
