Ed Norton's character was Tyler Durden all along. Tyler was just another personality that he had unknowingly created to give his stagnant life a kickstart

Edward Norton's character didn't actually have a name, isn't that interesting? Suffering from split personality he developed this other character, Tyler Durden, whom he saw as a leader/rival/nemesis, and because the story is told from his perspective, we are as 'fooled' as he is.
