Socialized medicine... at least you won't be hit by surprised bills, or be turned away because the doctor is not certified under the insurance company's listing. A socialized medical system doesn't prevent any one from going to his/her choice of high-priced private medical care. He/she can still buy into a health insurance of his/her choice. There's no stopping those who are bloody rich to have their own health insurance..

There's no stopping, under UK's socialized medical system, any Brit from seeking out health treatments from the highly priced Harley Street doctors, if they so desire. Socialized medical system assures all citizens have health care... and it prevents any vital diseases from spreading, if uncovered too late. What if someone, who handles food, contracts a deadly and contagious disease, but can't afford to go to a doctor? All it takes is for others to contract his/her diease by eating the food handled by him/her... and the spread of the deadly disease would go spiralling across the community. If UK did not have a socialized medical system, probably the madcow disease would not have been uncovered so early!

So many Americans are brainwashed to believe that there are no private doctors or private health care centers in nations with socialized health care. It bemuses me to see how clueless they are. UK has a socialized health care system. Do you really think the Queen of England or any of the Members of Parliament don't consult private practioners?

Countries with socialized medicine give their citizens better choices. They can either go for free treatment or choose to pay for private doctors. Nobody can be turned away when he/she falls sick.

Even if a person didn't know anything about health care, the word "socialized" should be enough of a clue as to which would be a better choice. This is America, not Cuba or the USSR. Why do some people feel that placing power in the hands of the government is a good thing? Name three social programs that the United States government is involved in that have turned out to be a smashing successes. I bet you can't.

I would prefer affordable health insurance, preferably a PPO rather than an HMO.

Socialized medicine tends to less efficient and often less available.
