If you had a an old Pentax with extra lenses you could use them on your pentax digital .

Pentax's K10D out classes anything else in the sub $1,000 USD range.
Better buffer (unlimited jpgs) then Nikon (144 jpgs)
more focus points then canon (11 vs 9)
in body Shake reduction
DNG and PEF raw

Ok jpgs arn't quite as crisp as Nikons but RAW has more usable information

All 3 companies make excellent entry level dslr cameras.

Go to http://dpreview.com and compare the models side by side, see which features appeal to you. Then go to a real camera store, and handle the different cameras, see which fits you best.

Under $1000, the best SLR is the Nikon D80. It's as close to a pro SLR that you can get. Canon's and Pentax's entries below $1000 are entry-level in nature.

You can try pricegrabber.com or Yahoo! shopping to find good deals. You should be able to get the D80 with an 18-55mm VR lens (image stabilized) for under $1000.
