Los Angeles Considers Potbellied Pig as Pet
AP
Published: December 4, 1995
A proposed change in zoning laws here would allow potbellied pigs to be licensed like other pets, but city planning officials contend that the law should not be changed because the pigs are a passing fad.
Under current law, city residents who want to keep potbellied pigs must go through a lengthy and expensive zoning variance process. The proposed change, advocated by pig owners, would put the pigs in the same category as dogs and other more common pets, but the city Planning Department is objecting.
Potbellied pigs/swine have not and do not share the same historic place and symbolic relationship with humans that cats and dogs do and should not be considered the same as these domestic animals," a Planning Department report said.
You can also call your local LA Humane Society and ask if potbelly pigs are still allowed as pets or considered livestock.
