I am thinking of buying this, I will mostly be using it for web surfing, I don't do any gaming or graphic rendering of any kind.

That is a nice price, but the Athlon Dual-Core is several years old (replaced by the Turion). You'll find that 2GB RAM will make a significant difference (especially if you ever hope to have Vista on it), so I would keep it.

If I were you, I would upgrade to the Vostro 1500. For $60 more, you'll get a Core2Duo processor (which is much faster, in spite of a slower clock speed), a 250GB Hard drive, and can put on Vista for free (if you desire).

The Vostro 1000 is just the basic/introductory/budget/ shoddy model intended for basic use (such as basic word processing or internet browsing). If you hope to do anything else, you'll find the 1500 to be much nicer. In fact, if you ever plan to do games, upgrade the video card for another $100 and you'll see a huge difference (we're talking over 100x better than the integrated video card).

I just purchased a Vostro 1400 (same as 1500 but smaller screen) and have been very very happy with it.

In sum, that $509 price is decent. But it is probably worth it to upgrade to the Vostro 1500. I recommend Vostros to anyone who asks about laptops.
