To the guys who have put Toney is too old, fat, cant make middlweight anymore etc. What i mean is who would win out of these two fighters when they both fought in the middleweight divison, and if they had both been around at the same time who would have won?. Thanks.

This was the one fight between two of the top middleweights of the 1990s that never happened. The only fighter who had a defense that matched Hopkins' was Toney. When James was in his prime he used that shoulder-roll defense to near-perfection. I would probably have to go with Hopkins if they had fought though because Bernard Hopkins was a very strong middleweight who always made weight without any issues. Toney on the other hand struggled all the time to make weight, and I don't think he was best as a middleweight, I think he was best as a super middleweight (and even there he could barely make weight). On fight night Hopkins would keep the fight in the center of the ring (Toney liked to go to the ropes) and win a close, competitive decision by landing the cleaner, effective blows.

Very good match up but it might not be a good fight. Both men are ornery as hell and tough. The fight could take place anyehere between Middle and Lt. Heavyweight. Toney has an edge in power but Bernard takes a punch quite well. Bernard has the better chin but not the power to hurt Toney.
I would go with Hopkins for one simple reason. Either man could trouble anyone. Yet Toney has always struggled to make weight in every class he has fought in under Cruiserweight. He never should have been a Heavyweight to begin with, though he did fairly well in that division.
The fight would have boiled down to conditioning. Hopkins is never out of shape. Thats why he has been able to fight near social secruity age. He's, by far, the more disciplined man.

James Toney built his career on a lucky knockout over Michael Nunn and a list of "Who's that?" opponents. If not for the Nunn fight and the "Lights Out" nickname, we probably wouldn't know who Toney is.
