Top loaders. No question.
With the front loaders, once they start you're pooched. You have no option for throwing in that sock that feel out of the basket in hall. Also, you have to practically be on your knees to make sure you have taken all the wet clothes out later.
Top loaders are more convenient, I think. You can add to the load if you need to, and there's no bending over or kneeling to empty them. Prices can be better too.

I use to sell washers at sears and let me tell you Front load is the way to go!
Most front loaders have a 3.8 capacity fitting up to 16 pairs of jeans! You can wash 23 large bath towels or a king sized comforter with no problem!
A front loader also cleans your clothes better, getting your whites the whitest you'll ever see them due to built in water heater which heats to excessively hot temperatures killing all germs and bacteria upon your request.
The Front loader uses less water, about 15 gallons per wash compared to 42 gallons in a top loader.
The front loader washer is energy star qualified! On top of that if you use the front load washer, you will spend less time drying your clothes due to the high final spin of an average 1100 rounds per minute extracting most of the water from your clothes.
I just have to add: Rated #1 in consumers reports would be the HE4t wash/dry set by Kenmore, its a real quality product! They are expensive but they will last you a long long time! They are made in Germany, where they wash with nothing but front loaders!
Edit: If you don't want to be squatting to get in wash/dry, pedal-stools can be bought to raise the set to your level and they also act as storage drawers!

Well my personal favorite is a top load. Reason is because I have had better luck. The first made them this way so that says a lot to me. I had a LG I thought it was junk and the tech service was horrible. It was a front load they sent 4 techs to my house finally they replaced it with a new model they said. So it worked fine for a while but the rubber seal where the door closes holds water in the rim and that water starts to smell really bad.I called them about that they said just make a slit with a razor knife in the back of it so water can drain.WHAT I said. It eventually crapped out 1 month after warranty was up so I purchased a basic top load washer.Just remeber that the more bells and whistles you have on it the more things to break down.

front loader is by far the best, more energy effeciant, cleaner and uses less water, however they tend to go bad quicker then a top loader because it needs shocks to keep it from shaking down the house. the new top loaders, actually there is one that has a clear top where you can watch your closth; however, they use twice as much water to wash.
front loaders are really good, and unlike what alot of people believe they don't leak if you take care of the seal which is pretty much just don't snag it or cut it with anything, anyway you can't go cheap on a front loader.
a case where you get what you pay for.

Top loading are easier.
But I love front loaders just cuz I like to watch the clothes spin around in all the soap!
