What is American dollar worth today in England? Should one exchange $$ before going? or upon arrival?

We'll be leaving for England mid May 2008.

1 US Dollar = 0.50151 British Pound
1 British Pound (GBP) = 1.99398 US Dollar (USD)

Get the money changed before you leave. Just bring enough for a day; you can get pounds at ATMs there.

Its probably easier to change it when you get there as banks here in the USA don't seem to have on-site money exchanges.

If you use your USA bank debit card in an ATM in Britain you will not get a good rate and could be charged commission.

Credit cards usually also charge commission also.

Try and shop around for the best rate with no commission, I usually use the money exchange in a department store called "Marks & Spencers" in Britian - they are all over the country and have pretty good rates and do not charge commission.

Its around two dollars to one british pound at the moment.

DO NOT CHANGE YOUR MONEY AT THE AIRPORT IN THE USA OR IN BRITAIN THEY WILL RIP YOU OFF.

If you want to lock in the exchange rate in case the dollar falls further, change some now. The official exchange rate is that on the foreign exchange market; you will pay more depending where where you change the money. Beware your credit card company's charges for exchange rate and fees!

Not much.
You need to know that if you take £££ from an ATM or your credit card it is going to cost you a bit of commission or fees. Check with your bank or credit card company. It's expensive over here. I'm American & I live here.

P.S. Bring a coat. It's cold.

It is worth precisely one pittance. I wouldn't wipe my **** with a US dollar.
