Well...it depends. If you are boarding, then the stable will have a lot of stuff like buckets, shovels, forks, crossties, etc. If you are keeping your horse at home you'll need a small fortune to start!
Anyway, trust me...horse people collect things over the years. So don't go hogwild just yet. Basics...you will of course need a saddle (and fittings if english), saddle pad or blanket, girth/cinch. You'll need a bridle, bit and reins to start but I suggest always keeping a spare bridle. Depending on the type of riding you do, you might need some type of protective boots for the horse...sports medicine boots, polo wraps, whatever. Maybe some bell boots. Do you intend on blanketing your horse? Then you need to consider blanket, sheets (even if you don't blanket your horse I still suggest investing in a cooler and a mesh sheet to use for after bathing) which brings us to grooming items...curry, softbrush, stiffer bodybrush, comb, hairbrush, hoofpick, hoof brush, sponges, rubber bands, sweat scraper, shampoo, conditioner, flyspray. Clippers, too. I suggest two halters. Lead ropes. I assume you have your helmet and riding boots and gear already. Shipping boots. First aid kit. That is pretty much the basics...but like I said, horse people collect things over the years. They are always inventing something new...new brushes, new shampoos, new bits, etc. No wonder us horse people spend so much on our horses! Don't forget the horsey treats, either. And try to find a tack auction, you can get a lot of the basics...trailer ties, buckets, saddle racks, etc for very cheap at auctions.
I get a lot of my supplies from countrysupply.com and jeffersequine.com. Both are reasonable sites.
The cost for your supplies will vary with your intended discipline and the quality of products you decide on.
Some things you will NEED: Halter, Lead Rope, Feed Bucket, Water Bucket, Brushes, Hoof Pick, Saddle, Saddle Pad, Bridle w Bit and Reins, and a First Aid Kit for emergencies that includes: Gauze, Tape, Antibiotic Ointment, Polowraps and/or Vet wrap, Linement, Thermometer, Stethoscope, Vet manual
To Maintain the horse, expect minimally: farrier visits every-other month, vet visit annually - include vaccinations and teethfloating with annual check-up and save a little $, more vet visits if the horse is older or has health problems, you will need a seperate savings account in case of vet emergencies, wormer every 6 weeks, hay, grain, supplements as needed.....
Somethings you SHOULD have: training books, videos, good trainer, extra lead lines, longe lines, extra saddle pad, splint boots, turn-out blanket, cooling sheet, shipping blanket and boots, heavy winter blanket extra reins (they DO break), extra halter, riding crop, lunge whip, lon lines, surcingle, extra buckets, cavaletti/barrels, muck bucket, wheelbarrow, misc shovels, manure fork, round pen, horse trailer, hay trailer, nice truck, tractor, 100 acre farm.......oh wait, thats MY dream!
