The only characters in the story that have proper last names are the Hobbits. All others are "son of ..." or another name describing them. GandAlf and Sauruman have no need of such names and their common names are not their true names anyway. They are the names that they have allowed others to know and use. But they are of a race higher than the mere mortals and are not bogged down by such things.
