mercury villager 1995?

Its a high mileage car. But its worked perfectly until yesterday. It stalled on the road. Called a wrecker and he didn't show up so I started the car and it ran for about 5 miles, and then for what seemed like no reason it died, acted like it was running on one cylinder. After a while it started again. I shut it down in a church parking lot, afraid it wouldn't run. It sounds like a fuel pump, but if it was fuel pump it wouldn't have even started. I checked fuses thinking the fuel pump fuse had blown, its good.

I liked the answer given. But I don't think its completely correct. I towed it back home today, about 70 miles and then started it up and ran it 40 miles. It didn't cut out at all. Ran like a champ.

The fuel pump is either gitting hot and shuting down or is not supplying the right amount of fuel pressure
