I was wondering if anyone out there has built a run-in shed (for horses)...if so how big and what did it cost? (location and what type of materials?). I may have to put up a run-in while saving to put up a barn. Hoping I can put up a 12x24 for around $1000. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

that seems like a tight budget for such a large structure. i would budget more. i know you're not talking about kits, but the kit price (the one i found) for a 12x24 is aver $4000. http://www.unlimited-source.com/runinshedprices.htm gathering your own material would be quite a bit cheaper, of coarse. you can just model it out of one of these kits: http://www.unlimited-source.com/runin_photogallery.htm
Well, the run ins that are at my place were put up by the people that owned it, so materials were the only cost. It has a 12X24 area for the horses. A wall that goes up about 2 and a half feet from the ground. The other side is a floor that is about a foot and a half below the half wall. Tack, feed bin and hay that they eat goes there. This is also a 12X24 area. Materials ( lumber is a commodity and prices vary) 9 6X6-15 (15 feet is a guess, the ceiling is about 10 ft high and I don't know how far into the ground the posts go. 36 2X6-24 (used for the half wall, floor and supports for the floor. and trusses) 36 4x8 T-1 11 panelling pieces. Tin roof and guttering across the part where the horses can go. Whole thing was stained for weatherproofing. The part with the floor has a double door - big enough to put a square bale in - this is just cut panel pieces with hinges and a clasp. total cost for materials is about $2500. Labor to have someone else do it, probably about $4000 So total would run about $6500 - but prices for lumber and labor vary with location. EDIT: These were not kits, just so you know. Kits may be cheaper, and come in varying qualities. They may be more expensive and I think you have to put them up yourself, so it depends on your faith in your own building skills.
