I've just gotten a male Staffordshire Bull terrier puppy, 11 weeks old. I've grown up with Staffies all my life, and also have a 9 year old female. My problem is, my puppy nips, which I expect because he's a puppy, however, how can I work on teaching him that it's not acceptable behavior? If I pet him, he thinks I'm playing and will nip me. When I grab his muzzle and tell him no, he thinks I'm playing with him, and will lunge and bite. When biting on other things that aren't his (ex, the socks on my feet, pens, and paper), I simply replace them with his toys. Is he old enough to learn this yet, and how do I go about starting to train him?

Nearly all puppies go through a biting stage. I've found the best thing to do is when your puppy bites you too hard you should yelp. Your pup doesn't understand why it's ok to bite other dogs and not you. You have to show him that he's hurting you. If he's determined to bite after that you can scruff him (grab the skin of the back of the neck) and lay him down on the floor with his belly up. This position forces him to submit to you. Don't let him up until he's calm and relaxed, looking away from you.

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.
It's best to start sooner than later. Try giving a high-pitched squeal or yelp when the dog bites down on you. If the dog continues to playbite, turn your back and walk away, only resuming contact when the dog is calm. The dog will eventually see calm bahavior as being rewarded.
They are never to old,he knows your playing voice,if he nips say no loud,not yelling or ouch,stop playing,I often picked up my pups and won't lean them up against my body and say NO,They knew they were 2 hands away from falling,I had the control,be consistent also say NO to anything but toys,it will stop him in his tracks,and replace with his chew toys,he needs some good chew rawhide's and since he is ok,i would buy a couple,when he softens it cut off that part,it does dry hard,but its thinner,and always supervise if he is chewing on a rawhide
