Barred Rock?

I have a chick that is either a barred rock or a black austrolope. I asked for a barred rock but they look so much alike that they weren't sure, so I said that was ok. When do barred rocks get their "checkered" feathers? She's around 3 or 4 weeks old, so her feathers are coming in, but all black. When should I be able to tell which breed she is?

If her feathers are coming in and she has no barring then she is not a Barred Rcok. If the feathers are all black she is an Australorp. As they lost their fluff and feather they get their "colored" feathers.
I have both kinds right now and they are almost 2 months and they developed their colors as the feathers came in.

Hi,

I would say now. Once the feather come through, you should be able to see the chequered feathers of a barred rock.

If they are coming out all black, then you have got Austrolopes.
