We'll travel to Boston in July, arriving on Tuesday and departing the next Tuesday (because that's when airfares are cheapest). We want to see of the surrounding area too.

I love wednesday morning in Boston. There is usually less traffic on wednesday morning for some reason.

Any day of the week is great for touring Boston. You can go see Fenway, but no games because all Red Sox games are SOLD OUT! You can do the freedom trail.
If you are traveling outside Boston try to travel after 10am and before 3pm because before 10am and after 3pm traffic is a nightmare.
