If you only address a symptom, you are spending all your time trying to fix the outward problem, the symptom only.
Example - when someone's in very bad pain, you give them aspirin instead of trying to find what the true cause of the pain is.
Or you give someone a bandaid without finding out why they are bleeding.
If you address the root cause, you are finding out what the CAUSE of the problem is, and attacking that. It's more in-depth investigation and more permanent solutions.
