I found a baby bird behind my office an i picked it up. then I started reading posting online that suggest I put it back that the parents will surely come back. I did, and mom has not returned. Its getting dark and i wil not allow that baby bird to die overnight. Please any good advice. i live in fresno california and they posting hve readto take it to a wildlife preserv or somthing lie that. Does anyone know of such a place in fresno area?

Sorry you have been given so much WRONG info...birds have a poorly developed sense of smell and will in no way reject or abandon a chick due to it's being touched by humans..it really is amazing how many people still believe this old wives tale. Did you watch from afar to see if the parents were still coming to feed? If you were too close the parents would consider you a predator and not come. Also, you must watch continually as parents visits to feed can be quick and sometimes infrequent. Only if you are POSITIVE that the parents are not around (which would be unusual) then you would need to take it to a wildlife rehab. Look here for one near you:

as soon as you touched the bird, it's scent would have changed, making it extremely unlikely that the parents would accept it, even if they did come back. they may have even turfed it out if it hasn't been too windy. it is great you are willing to save it - you need to get the bird warm and secure or it will die of fright. find a small box, newspaper and an old t-shirt or something soft. if it still has fluffy feathers, wrap it loosely in the cloth and put it in the box lined with newspaper. close the box and put it somewhere quiet. if it is cold weather, put it close to a heater or a radiant desk lamp. the side of the box should be almost body temp - not too hot to touch. ring a local vet and see if they will take it (should be no cost to you) or if they will recommend someone to contact. they should have a list of wildlife carers if it is a native bird. you need to find care quickly or the bird will die - they have a fast metabolism and need frequent food and water, but the wrong food can also be harmful. hope all goes well

If you did, it probably didn't return because you got the human scent on it, and it makes it believe it isn't their baby.
Research online on what to feed it, I know last year we took care of a baby bird at a sleepover (because my friend's cat got a hold of it but stopped the cat). We made some oatmeal and fed it every 3 hours. It did live for a few days, but my friend had to leave to poor bird and it passed away. But keep it warm by blowing head with your breath. Good luck and hope the bird makes it. Get help from the pet store or vet if you aren't sure you're doing anything right.

While I do not know of any such place in Fresno I can say this. If its time for the baby birdie to leave the nest the mother will kick the baby birdie out. If there is something wrong with the baby birdie the mother will kick the baby birdie out. Be careful, it may have a disease. I had some baby birdies fall out of a nest after I trimmed a bush were they were located. The Mommy followed the babies around and feed them off the floor.

if you can do anything at all to feed it do it and I'll tell you why,I've been reading about everyone sighting and seeing birds on the ground and nests and I've said i have never seen OR ,then the other day my day my neighbor says to me I have a robins nest in my bushes,I said how do you know,he replied oh I check on it and this morning I noticed the mother was killed ,so I said why don't you let me take the babies because there were three of them,he showed them to me, and he replied oh no the father will come back for them,I went to check the next day and they were all gone feathers every where so if ou can save the bird sweetie save it .I'm a breeder and I"m still devastated.
