What forces (in America) have left families on the streets?

Just wondering if anyone knows of any forces/corporations/etc that have left large numbers of families on the streets. (Kind of like when the RIAA sued tons of families that downloaded music illegally, except that I'm uncertain what actually became of those families)

I don't know that corporations have left anybody on the street.  However, some of the forces that lead to homelessness are:
addiction, unemployment, domestic violence, poverty, mental illness
