last night it stopped working, and I unplugged it and restarted my computer a few times and unplugged and plugged it back in some more and finally got the red "charging" light to come on.
well today its doing the same thing only, now the red light wont even come on and it wont charge, a window just keeps popping up saying "USB device not recognized"
help?

You can do a couple of different things, change ports, if that doesnt help, you will probably have to uninstall the programme you were using and reinstall it, sometimes these things happen for no reason, if neither of those things work, try system restore to the day before it happened, hope this helps, goodluck! :)

You might need to reinstall the software for your phone. Either that or try the phone data cable in a different USB port. The phone isn't being recognised for some reason, so I would suggest doing one or the other of the above suggestions. If you have any problems, feel free to give me a shout.
