I have a room air conditioner that is installed thru the wall, the outside temp yesterday was about 98 degrees and the huminity was very high, when I turned on my unit the compressor goes on and stays on for about 10 minutes then shuts off for about 5 and goes on again? Is this normal?

It should also be known that after a while the compresser stays on constlently, this is alos the 2nd unit I got and the first one did the same thing, on coller days 85-90 it works fine

The unit probably needs topping off with freon and maybe some oil added for good measure. The only time that compressor is supposed to shut down is if the room temperature is right. It may be something as simple as a thermal overload going bad all the way to the old coffee can ain't getting out of start mode and is bad.The only way to know is to get a qualified tech out there to clean and service it.
