What are video game bots?

I'm watching a video game review of a battlefield game and it I hear the word "bots" a lot. Are bots what people play when they are playing single-player games?

no usually bots are players that arent actually playing. i know that sounds weird, but instead of them playing, they buy a program that sets up a computer-like person to play for the person when they are not on. its popular with runescape and other mmorpgs. but usually you are not allowed to use them.
while on , the computer guy on your player account wont talk.

Bots can mean one of two things.

1. An AI controlled character. One that a player doesn't control, but the character still plays like a real person is playing it.

2. A person cheating and using a computer program to play the game for them. This is cheating and will get you banned from every game you do it on.

Sounds like the Artifical Intelligence bots. In some game on multiplayer mode you can fight enemies with friends offline against AI (bots). So if you have 3 people, in some games you can have 5 more people(in this case computer AI) (or more depending on the game) fighting against/with you

It's a computer controlled character, they usually aren't that great, I've never seen them communicate with players, and are just basically to fill up the game some more.

they are robots you can play with, it's just like playing a less skilled person that doesn't have a mic and never talks
