Question

Ok here it is, i just enlisted in the Navy, my ship date is september 25th of 2008, not a problem but there is a problem. I have a G.E.D.. I did fine on the ASVAB i scored a 78 and that qualified me for everything with the exception of nukes, but they said because of my G.E.D. that i had to ship no later than october 1st and no earlier than september 23rd because of some BS dont ask me what it was they explained it but i cant remember. the problem is that the jobs that they had available during the time frame were not the ones that I want. i still want to go in but the only job that was even remotely interesting was an O.S. (operations specialist), not a bad job, but not the job I want to do for the next four years of my life, they question is what can i do to change it, they wont let me change my leave date, and they wont give me any other jobs options, is there any way that i can change jobs while im in boot camp with the classifiers?? and if i can are there penalties. please help!!

Desertviking, i understood the "B.S." I just didnt feel the need to define it but i guess i should of been a little more precise.. I am going in as an E-3 because I completed my DEP book and found two people to join. what do you think the chances are that I will be able to change jobs?

You can try and gain access to a different rate when you meet with the classification personnel in boot camp to fill out Page #3 of your Service Record. The reason for the October 1st cut-off date is simple. That day is the beginning of the new fiscal year (Fiscal Year 2009). So, regulations and/or Federal law might prohibit your entry with only a GED after that date. 
So, you better begin to comprehend and understand that sort of "B.S." because you will be guided by it throughout your enlistment. As far as your pay goes, the year starts on October 1st and ends on September 30th of the next calendar year.

you still don't have to go.....your only bound to the dep contract not the official enlistment contract....i would advise going to college for a year or two....get an associate's in something that relates to the rate you want or atleast a year of college and you will get E-2 or even E-3...you will get the rate you want when you enlist and you'll be an airman already when everybody else is still a recruit. think about it only a year...that's nothin. play it smart cause they don't like change crap once you've signed papers.
