I'm confused, I played this game a while ago and got really far in it but never was able to summon. I did fight the summons from X when they merge with the machina, but never got to summon them. I didn't know if this was a final fantasy where you couldn't summon or if you had to do some sort of side quest thing. I thought I heard before i even bought the game that you could summon, but I probably heard wrong.

Well, every Final Fantasy game (excluding X and X-2) are stand alone games, with different worlds, storylines, and characters. In this way, FF games are different than usual sequels. If I were you, I'd check wikipedia. These games have epic, detailed storylines, and it would take me a long time to describe one of the games to you, never mind ALL of them.
