Ruth, Bonds,Williams, Aaron, Mays, Griffey, A-Rod, Mantle, McCovey.
Ruth was the best, and hit many of his dingers in the toughest park around.
Bonds was special.
Ted Williams spend many of his prime years serving America in the armed forces---lord only knows what he'd have done had he been playing baseball instead.
Hank Aaron was Mr. Consistency...seldom leading the majors in HR's but always in the top three---and a real gentleman.
Willie Mays fielded his position better than anyone, and crushed the ball often enough to make you say "oooooooh"
Griffey has gotten his numbers faster than anyone else...but let's remember that he plays a 162 game season, not 154, oh, btw, he has been hurt sometimes, too.
A-Rod is awesome, and the best infielder who could also knock the socks off a pitch.
Mantle would have been the best ever had he not soaked himself in booze---a modern parallel would be John Dailey, a golfer with more talent than Tiger but zero self-discipline...
McCovey will appear on few lists, but he was a clutch hitter who drew tons of intentional walks, and when they did not walk him, they paid the price. He seldom struck out.
I have not stuck strictly with home-run derby guys, because fielding matters, and I can't make that go away. But if I had to pick a hitter purely for hitting and bet my life on him, it'd be Ted Williams.
