I sold a used car, now buyer keeps calling and isn't registering car under his name??

ok i sold my used car privately about 2 weeks ago.

I didn't have the title at the time because I just renewed my registration for '09 and the DMV was sending me the title through mail.

So we signed a Bill of Sale agreement, he gave me the money, i gave him the car, and told him that i would send him the title once i receive it.

So when the title came in, I filled out the Release of Liability for myself, signed the title, and sent it over to his address.

Starting about 2 days ago, he's been calling me with all sorts of different numbers, and when i pick up, he complains about some problem about the car and wants me to pay to fix it. I even got a call from his mechanic too...

Now today he says he won't register the car under his name because I owe him money to fix the car or he wants a refund...

Ok, what the hell can i do about this? I even smogged the car and renewed the registration before i sold it.

You did what you need to do. Cars sales between private partys are AS IS so he gets no warranty. Tell him to pound sand and enjoy his new car. You owe him nothing. You dont know what he has done to the car since hes had it.The time for him to inspect or have a mechanic look at it was before he bought it no after......................UJN

Here is the deal. He did not have to give you the money until the title was in his hands signed over to him. At that point the car is his. He was trusting that you would send him the title. He signed the Bill of Sale and gave you the money. Finito!
You don't care if he won't register the car. That is his loss. It is his by the bill of sale and the title which you say you sent.
Used is used. Buyer beware. Not seller beware. Too bad. So sad. he should have had a qualified mechanic inspect the car BEFORE he made the purchase and made the complaints then at that time or not buy it or dickered for a better deal for the repairs.
It is too late for him. You are safe. If he calls again tell him you are gonna charge him with harrassment.
The car is his and the problems (if there are any real or imagined) are his. Not your. If he doesn't like the car, he can always sell it.

o.k in California you have 5 days to report if you sold you card or not, if I was you I will Be there tomorrow first thing and since is been two weeks the guy can not ask you for repairs since you even paid for the smog check, just go and tell the people on the DMV that you would like to cancel the registration on your car and make sure you notify the person who bout the car from you, I don't think he will want to lose the car for falling to do the registration, I am surprise what about insurance? do you still have the car in yours? because if you have canceled you will be receiving a letter from the DMV soon, because by law if you cancel the insurance on any car that insurance company has to contact the DMV and tell them about it, I know because I just trade in my old car and the dealership did not send the paper work to them and guess what the DMV is sending me all kinds of forms because they want to know what are my plants regarding the car they cancel the registration and everything. so good luck to you, make sure you take the bill of sale that the other person sing.

There's no Lemon Law for old heaps like you sold. What did they think they were getting for $5k? If they take you to court, you'll win all things being equal. Don't even worry about it. If they start calling you a lot, or coming by your house or where you work, call the cops.

You just need to let the dmv know the car is no longer yours. You'll need to provide a bill of sale generally. This happens all the time. They know how to deal with it. Then, they get all over the buyer to register the car as they want the money.
