nosoop4u has the best answer out of everybody in here. He definitely knows what he is talking about. But to make sure that you kill off all your bacteria and parasites, you will need to boil the sand, not once but maybe 2 or 3 times, you will need to do it at 20 to 30 minute intervals. By doing this you are ridding a lot of bacteria that isn't good for the aquarium. However, some bacteria can get resistant to heat, and that is why boiling them for 2 or 3 times is necessary. By boiling the sand it is also known as curing. Before boiling the sand, you should rinse the sand thoroughly first to get all the unwanted bigger debris out. Then you should boil the sand 2 or 3 times. If you do want sand really bad, to save you some hassle and time, you can also purchase sand that is already cured online or some petshops do carry sand for sale. I think that'll be the safest bet. However, like nosoop4u said, your ph balance may rise due to having the sane inside of your tank. Certain species but not limited to are tolerant of higher PH levels, some isn't and the higher PH levels can also do more harm than good. it should be fine if you wash it and let it sit in water for the whole day however you know you have schooling fish and you have a pretty good size aquariam to add more so you should add 2 more neon tetras and 1 more zebra danio...Show more

you actually can put a sand dollar in a fresh water aquarium , just soak it first in tap water maybe a day or so and rinse it well a lil salt is good for an aquarium but if it was found on a shore beach or store bought it was probably just dried out without de-salting and this might be a tad too much salt depending on tank size.....but yeah go ahead as long as pre soaked to release as much salt as possible...Show more
