Why does NBC run olympic coverage from 8pm to 1am?

And leave the main events for the 11pm to 1am time slot? They are absolutely stupid this year doing that - I hope no one is watching them or their commercials. It would be nice to see what happened that day before 10pm so I can go to sleep at a normal time. Are they a bunch of idiots or does everyone else like what they're doing?

OK - I can admit when I'm wrong. I didn't realize it was live - I thought they were just showing pretaped highlights anyway. NEVERMIND! :o)

Because its LIVE, unless you want to watch re-runs in the morning,

Because China is 12 hours ahead of EST and those events late at night are being shown live. That is just how the IOC scheduled them. I would personally much rather see live events than have to watch a tape delay...it's just more exciting. And if they showed a tape delay, it would have to be the next morning or afternoon when many people are at work. Plus, the results would already have been known for 12 hours. They can't help that the Olympics are being held in a country with such a time difference!

Because it's 12hrs ahead....if they didn't show it late...it would be the next morning...which would be a lot worse.

NBC went to a lot of trouble to get events like gymnastics and swimming shown live in the US. That's why swimming and gymnastics competitions are being held so early in the morning in China.

In the US, when we had the olympics in Atlanta most of the events like gymnastics were live at night so everyone could watch here. NBC negotiated for months and months to move events to the morning in China--evening for us. It has paid off though...because the number of people watching has increased greatly this yr in comparison to the last 2 olympics.

I can't say I like it and neither can my very very tired eyes. There is a 12 hour time difference and to see live events, it has to be 11PM here. (Live swimming event at 11AM in Beijing, means we are seeing it at 11PM here.)

And don't forget how ratings work. Gotta have the best events aired during prime time.

Because they are running it live, and over in China it is 12 hours ahead of us, so when it is 8pm here, it is 8am there. We cannot have everything on our time, when it is in the United States it is aired on US time.
