Cell phone networks and public safety networks depend on a complicated network of interconnected systems. Computer networks and other systems must operate under perfect conditions. When these systems or conditions fail, whole systems can go down.

Amateur radio operators have communications systems designed to operate under poor conditions. Many different ways to communicate are possible. Hams constantly practice and prepare themselves for emergencies. As we speak with Gustav, amateur radio operators are activily communication and preparing.

Because the only way to communicate during a disaster like Hurricane Katrina is through HAM radio. During the disaster cellphone networks are down and local landline phones were destroyed. The only means of communication is through radio.

A couple of classics are the Icom IC 735 (i have one) and the Kenwood TS 440. Used i would expect to pay under $400 for either. But there are many good used HF rigs. Try to test it or get a guarantee.
