Why did the Republicans dislike the drilling bill....?
... that the Democrats just passed in the House today? The Democrats have agreed to allow some offshore drilling during this time of fuel crisis. BUT they made sure: * New drilling is only allowed between 50 and 100 miles offshore * The bill repeals tax cuts for the oil industry * It requires states to give their permission for drilling on their land * It "offer[s] incentives for renewable energy, require[s] the government to release oil from its emergency reserve, and force[s] oil companies to drill on federal lands they already lease from the government."
15 Republican representatives voted for it, but more opposed it. They didn't like the provisions listed above (for example, they wanted drilling to start 3 miles offshore). But why not?
Rep. don't like the bill because it doesn't give enough freedom for the oil companies to drill when and where they want to. I personally would like to swim in an ocean without having to worry about oil slicks. I love those provisions that were added.
Getting some bucks to move forward to 21st century technology is the real agenda. At this point the GOP wants a blank check to drill in hopes that for several more decades they can keep their friends in the Oil Mafia in business. The democrats gave them a bit of what they wanted in exchange for technical improvments so that we can sooner than later get out from under oils 19th century technology. Of course the GOP doesn't want this deal because they know that the oil guys will be paying in part for their own demise. I can't blame them for that, nobody wants a broken rice bowl. But when you think about it, it isn't the government's job to keep Exxon or BP in business....their job is to make it possible via infrastructure to keep the lights on and the wheels on the road at the lowest possible overall cost. Or, the greatest good for the greatest number! I don't know how this is going to play out, but given the nature of our failing banking and insurance system...deregulated to the point of going belly up, 'drilling' is going to be the least of our worries. Bailing these weasels out with money we don't have while fighting two failing wars with more money we don't have will trump everything that you hear from both parties. It seems that nobody wants to say the words, 'We're $#%^ed'!!!! As long as nobody says it they hope it isn't happening. Well, it is happening. It's CYA time...the chickens, Rev. Wright said, really are coming home to roost.....and they're bringing all their relatives with them!
Because it is basically like saying were going to let drill a little bit so maybe you will stfu. When most people think that along with any and every other alternative we should be drilling wherever there is actually some crude. I personally think we should have been off of oil 10 years ago but wth do I know.
Filled with pork, and 50-100 miles out is not where the majority of the oil is at. It is closer to 25 miles then 50. The dems are just doing hoping that it gets vetoed.
