How do you solve this!!!?

An automobile tire is filled with a pressure of 30 lb/in^2 at 25 degrees Celcius. What is the new tire pressure if the temperature drops to 5 degrees celcius. Assume there is no change in volume.

Favorite Answer

P1/T1=P2/T2

so

30/25=P2/20

P2=(30*20)/25

P2=24

This is to do with the Ideal Gas Equation :

pv / t = pv/t

so as volume is fixed in your example, the equation you need is p/t = p/t which is pressure divided by temp (in case 1) equals pressure divided by temperature (in case 2). Temp needs to be in kelvins though so add 273 to get degrees kelvin.

Your pressures are in units of lbs/in2 but I dont think you need to change these as I think these will cancel out. If not you need to change them to atmospheres as a standard unit...
