it all depends on what state your in but some require that you have a life vest while under way. i invested in a auto fire life vest. it inflates if the trigger gets wet. fishing is the deadliest sport known. simply because you can't see a 40ft log 6 inches under the surface. alcohol is a major contributor to this fact also.but there are more deaths in fishing than any other sport, i think of it this way if i'm knocked unconscious how will i put on my life vest.

Life jacket for all crew (including Joli the sea dog) anytime the boat leaves the slip. Passengers are ENCOURAGED to wear one and required if the weather turns nasty. Even the I'm a good swimmer types see reason if the water is 50 degrees and the waves are 4 feet or more.

There are so many other requirements for safe boating beyond the PFD.
Just watch those idiots on PWCs and you will understand what I mean. While every one of them is required to wear a PFD, so many of them do stupid and unsafe maneuvers it puts us all at risk.
Learn the rules of the road.
Learn the basics of safe and sound boat operation.
Your PFD will only protect you in certain situations, a PWC inserted in your hull at high speed will have nothing to do with a life jacket.

not always. At sea when all others were down below asleep, clipped on 100% of time while on deck. Neither my wife or myself wanted to awaken and find the other missing at sea for 1 to 4 hours. Guests were offered PFDs and given a suggestion that they wear them. Harnesses are more practical on many sailboats.

We have a canal boat and don't wear a life jacket on the English canals although I would insist on children travelling with me wearing them, especially near locks.
We do carry them, though, and it is de rigeur to wear them in deep water areas, like the River Thames.
