We bought a rather expensive butane lighter in the shape of a small derringer. I have tried to refill the lighter and other types of butane devices but I have never had much luck. Is there some trick to the process?

It's been a while, but I, too, used to have trouble. Try holding the butane refilling container either upside-down or right-side up. One way or the other should fill your lighter. It may say on the can which way is best. Sometimes the refilling containers come with several different refilling adapters -- generally, go with the smallest one that fits your derringer.

Read the instructions.
Make sure you have a refill canister that matches the valve on the lighter.
Remember you're transferring a liquid.
Some refillers siphon it, some need to be inverted.
