Opening password-protected files in Open Office?

I have a lot of files that were created in Microsoft Office and are password-protected.
a. Impress is unable to open any such ppt files.
b. Writer is unable to save the files in the same format, with the password still there.

Is there a way to work around this? My intention is use OOo as my primary office software, but the files should remain MS Office-compatible in case they have to be opened on a different computer.

See here: http://www.computeractive.co.uk/computeractive/news/2154626/microsoft-dismisses-openoffice .Although this doesn’t mention Impress, I know from other sources that this also has a password problem.

The simplest solution is not to password your documents, which is what I do.

If that is not acceptable for security reasons, you can place the files in password protected folder, so that only you can access them, which can be rather a nuisance.

There may be a program installed which specifically allows you to password protect files so you could try and find that and install it. I don't have windows 7 but this is the usual setup on windows except usually you have to download an external program to encrypt the files. There is always the no-tech solution of deleting all encrypted files and she may not know how to set passwords on individual files.
