I'm Adopting my neice's baby?

I am adopting my niece's 4 month old baby girl (decision has been made by everyone involved). My niece and the father are ready to go right now. Everyone lives in Utah.

How long does this process take?
What are some of the steps involved?
How much does this process cost?
Any professionals, websites, etc... offing free initial Q&A?

Gee, why not go to your ward and ask around--they're experts at dismantling families.

your first poster gave you some real good info but I wanted to ad that part of the whole process is lots of interviews and background checks. even in a family adoption you have to be 21 or over, some states don't allow singles to adopt. Without knowing all the details and giving you some things they look at.It will take at least a few months. and thousands of dollars.

You need to hire a family law attorney, as you will still need to follow your state's laws even with in-family adoption, and will probably need a homestudy.

The parents should have their own attorney to ensure they understand exactly what they are signing and how it will affect them permanently.

You would pay your attorney fees, court filing fees, homestudy fees and possibly more depending on the requirements.

My sister gave one of her daughters to my mother to raise. It was pretty simple since everyone agreed- you just go to a lawyer and have him draw up the papers. Everyone signs, you pay the fee, and you're a mom. Or dad.
