No S^-1 means you have a 1st order reaction and you need to use those rate laws. I believe they are referring to units of k and the units vary according to the orders:
0 order units of k are mol/L*s or M*s
1st order units of k are 1/s
2nd order unit of k ar L/mol*s or 1/M*s
