Transexuals and prison....where do they go?

Sorry if this question has been asked before but here it is again.
If a woman had a sex change and became a man and was sentenced to prison, does she go to the male or female prison?

for example:

if this person was sentenced to 10yrs in prison, where would they go? What if they had the sex change and looked like the opposite sex?

I know this one. I worked in an all male prison for years. Until the sex change is complete, they will be sent to whatever facility that would house the gender they have, down there.

There was a preop inmate, who was quite gorgeous, to be honest, but s/he only had one more operation to go. He was placed in a male facility, in protective custody, for his own protection. During the time of his incarceration, the state would not pay for any hormone treatments, as it is considered elective, so eventually, we had this long haired blond bombshell with enormous boobs, but a five o'clock shadow. We've had several inmates like this, and all have been treated the same way (placed in isolation), as the other inmates cannot be trusted around them, and the person would get hurt. When a person is sentenced for a long time, they do not get any medical assistance with their transition, so many "revert" back to whatever gender they were to begin with.

We also had a person who used to be a female, and now a male (complete surgery) who was placed in general pop, and no one knew. I don't think it is as noticeable. His voice got higher, due to lack of male hormones, but there wasn't enough of a difference in his physical makeup to have the other inmates look at him any differently. Socially, he was very feminine, but, that isn't an uncommon thing in prisons for some to be that way.

You'de be surprised at how MANY trans sexuals, trans gendered, homosexual people are in the state prison system. Usually the judge will order a psychiatric evaluation and medical examination to determine the true sexual gender. If they HAVE a penis (regardless of what gender they LOOK like) they are probably going to the male prison. If they have a vagina (regardless of what gender they LOOK like) they are probably going to a female prison. Anywhere they are sent, they can expect some degree of sexual harassment and abuse. Some times they are placed into "protective custody"...(commonly referred to as PC)...which is sometimes even worse than the general population.

Very well said. Its really sad that many people dont see what you see because many people have a very narrow mind and think its a gay man WANTING to be a girl to trick straight men and I just hope one day people understand that it really isnt a choice and that they really are a woman trapped in a man's body or the other way around. I just pray that one day people are more understanding towards them and see that it really is "body dismorphia syndrome "

I'd imagine that whichever genitalia they currently had would determine where they went. I know that's how they do it in lock-up, so...
