"A "Top Contributor" is a member of the Yahoo Answers community who has shown that they are knowledgeable in a certain category. Each user can be a top contributor in a maximum three categories.
You earn it or lose it depending on your recent participation in a certain section.
The more positively you contribute, the more chance there is that you will get a TC badge. Just like featured users or category leaders, it's another way to give credit to community members."
The TC badge is awarded on the number of questions answered and best answers received by the user in a particular week, in a particular category.
It is rumoured that you need at least a 10 percent best answers in your chosen category to get a TC badge although the actual percentage and the number of answers is Yahoo's secret. All you see and read is speculation, rumour, assumption and guesswork.
A user who is on the leader board may or may not have a TC badge, the criteria is measured on weekly participation in a particular category (number of answers and % of best answers in the category).
The easiest way to get a TC badge is to concentrate on one category where many questions are asked and hope to get some best answers
If you have contributed enough to meet Yahoo's criteria, the orange badge will appear below your avatar on Monday morning.
It can disappear just as easily if you don't keep answering questions in your chosen category.

To be a top contributor you need to be knowledgeable in up to three categories. the exact formula is kept secret by yahoo but the common theory is that you need a minimum of 10% best answers in each particular category and is said to be reviewed weekly. the top contributor badge is not permanent and can be removed at any time.
A top contributor badge is not hard to get just needs some dedication and work.
So here are a few pointers to get you on your way.
************************************
1.> First choose the category/s you feel you are knowledgeable in. up to three category's. And research every detail you can find with links to add to the answer.
************************************
2.> Try to be polite and answer the question accurately the and to the point.
************************************
3.> Set yourself a target of how many questions to answer each day I recommend you start with 10-20 per day. You can answer more when you become more confident.
************************************
4.> Remember its not the amount of points that count it is the percentage of best answers that gets you the orange badge.
************************************
5.> Try to be helpful and make a effort to do what you can to help.
************************************
6.> Do not answer questions you don't think you can get you best answer (it will lower your percentage of best answers).
************************************
7.> Remember when you get your orange badge you must continue to answer questions and maintain your percentage of best answers and keep your TC badge.
Check your avatar every Monday that’s the day they add the badge (or take it away).
And finally stay away from "controversial" categories to avoid violation reports.

In order to become a Top Contributor (TC) in Yahoo! Answers, you need to keep answering questions in a particular category and also keep your best answer percentage which must be 12% or above. In other words, you need to keep being active in that certain category and keep answering questions. And when you are answering question, try to be as detailed/ specific as possible, which will give you a great chance to make your answers to become Best Answers.
And after being a TC, you still need to maintain active in that category and keep (maintain) your Best Answers’ percentage. A person can be a TC of three categories. Some people have four (which means they really have great contribution in those categories).
Just try your best and you will get there.

Hope this helps and all the best.

It's not really about points, but about your best answer percentage. If you have a percentage of 10% best answer or higher in 1-3 categories (meaning you contribute to those areas a lot and get a good best answer percentage), then you will receive a badge.
I've had my badge in yahoo Answers for some time now, but I just recently changed the other one to Yahoo Toolbar. I lost the badge status in Cleaning and Laundry because I did not contribute to that category much anymore. I have however been going to Y! Answers and Toolbar every day. That keeps my badge current.
So the TC badges are not permanent; you must keep contributing to your categories of choice and continue to get best answers in them to retain your badge.
I hope this helps.
