Louisiana was colonized by the French and Spanish, with considerable presence from Roman Catholic authorities. The initial local divisions were organized as ecclesiastical parishes centered around churches, and the system was retained and defined when Louisiana was admitted to the Union as a State in 1845. The definition was enshrined into official usage in the state constitution beginning in 1811.
