how make senior rescue dog with torn acl's in both hind legs comfortable?

this sweet boxer was a rescue. he's been with us for 5 months now. he is very senior (guessing 12+ years) and surgery is not an option.

he's on metacam. sometimes he pants so hard... other times he's totally comfortable. he has great difficulty doing anything like stairs, drags his feet/nails when he walks and truly has no good use of his hind legs.

we just want to keep him comfortable.

is there anything we can use (pharmalogically) to help? he already sleeps on a big old down duvet covered in a wool blanket. he eats well still and sometimes is even playful.

any ideas?

thx.

Ask your vet to put the dog on Cosequin DS and Welactin Salmon Oil (Google these). These are fairly expensive, but you can buy the human equivalents at WalMart for much less. They are Cosamin DS and Rexall Salmon Oil. Ask your vet for the proper dosages. There is also a pain medication called Tramadol which can be given with the Metacam. Also, make sure the dog is on a good senior dog food and consider getting him a doggy wheelchair.I have a 16 year old dachshund mix who does very well with his! I found his for a decent price on ebay.Give your old doggy a cuddle for me.

Ask your Vet. but Tramadol can be used along with the Metacam.
