Does it save more money to shop with coupons or buy generic brands? ?

It really depends. Generics and store brands are usually cheaper, but if a store gives double or even triple coupons, you might be better with that. These people you see on TV put a lot of time into this. (Some of them are kind of fanatical, from what I've seen.) They send for rebates, shop at stores that give double coupons, and if it says you have to buy five of something to get the discount, they'll do it. Sometimes they have to buy one thing to get a discount on the other, etc. They'll go to three or four different stores, combining store specials with coupons. Who's got the time for that? The average person doesn't get anywhere near this kind of result. I use coupons, but, for example, I won't buy something I don't really want or a brand I don't like just because I've got a coupon for it. Edit: Brutally Honest, you make some very good points. The whole reason manufacturers distribute coupons is to try to get you to buy something you wouldn't normally buy.
It's all about comparison shopping. You could buy a name-brand with a coupon, but the store-label might STILL be cheaper. So you need to do your math right then and there in the aisle.
I frankly don't even use coupons; they're a lot of hassle, too time consuming, and I rarely buy the name-brand products anyway, so what's the point? I usually end up spending MORE money on shopping when I use coupons because I end up buying something BECAUSE of that stupid slip of paper -- whether or not I need or use the damned item!
You can save a lot of money with coupons but you have to put some time into it. I've read that people check sales adds and then use the coupons they have. You can get stuff for free or really cheap. It's like anything else though, you have to set time aside and research what you are shopping for. I've tried and can save a few dollars here and there.
You certainly have to plan your meals and everything around coupons that you find. You need to mix and match them. Buying generic also helps you save money. In most cases generic can be as good as, or even better than name brand. It's silly to pay extra just for a name. If you plan around the coupons, and buy generic, you will save a good bit. Maybe not $475, these people take saving money to a whole new level. Good luck!
