Grey's Anatomy goof about Lexie's age?

Either I'm missing something really obvious, or there's a huge discrepancy in the show Grey's Anatomy. Now, Meredith's dad left her mom when she was 5. So, Lexie must be like 6 years younger than Meredith. However, Lexie somehow gets into the same program only a year later. So either Lexie's some progeny who skipped like 5 years of education, or Meredith took a few years off from school?

This has been bugging me for a while now. If anyone can clear this up for me, that would be really appreciated. Thanks.

there isn't three years between them, because the first 3 seasons are actually only 1 year in grey's anatomy time. you only intern for one year, not three.

If I remember right, this is now Season 5 and Lexie only came on last year, so season 4. This doesn't include the tail end of season 3 when we first met Lexie, and her mom and their dad. That puts 3 years of age between them. Other than that, I don't remember there being a plot line that said Lexie's parents were married when she was born!

You're probably right about some of the logic gap, but don't over think any TV show. They just needed to add another character and plot twist!

Lexie is a proginy. She is 7 years younger than Meredith (she tells Mark she's only 24). Her perfect memory allowed her to skip grades in early childhood, and graduate high school early.

Meredith left school for a while, and Lexie IS a prodigy. Both are true.

I think the better question is: how the hell did she finish medical school at 24? You finish it at 26 if you do everything by the book. Even if she skipped 3rd grade, she would be 25, not 24.
