None of it matters.

The Constitution, in the 20th Amendment, reads:
"The terms of the President and Vice President shall end at noon on the 20th day of January, and the terms of Senators and Representatives at noon on the 3d day of January, of the years in which such terms would have ended if this article had not been ratified; and the terms of their successors shall then begin..."

With or without an oath, with or without a bible or any other book or prop, the president became president at noon on January 20, 2009. President Obama was president for a few minutes prior to the first oath of office.

Article II, Section 1, of the Constitution, reads, in part:
"...Before he enter on the Execution of his Office, he shall take the following Oath or Affirmation:

'I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.' "

None of the oath requires any religious book and does not include "...so help me God" as a part of the oath, though that is traditional. Indeed, it may be expressed as an affirmation, not an oath. And, though we had two presidents who had been raised as Quakers (Hoover and Nixon), neither choose to affirm....Show more
