Car question for folks that know about fords?

I have 2 questions please.
1. how many miles to a gallon does a 91 explorer get to the gallon?
2. What can you do to make the gas gage work on a 91 explorer?
do you have to buy a completely new instrument panel? or is
there another way?

When I got the car the only thing on the instrument panel that worked was the speedometer. Everything else never moved. We changed some fuse and then everything except the gas gage started working again. It is forever stuck on E and we've filled it up and no change. Hope this helps a little.

13 to 19 depending on how you drive it, and which engine and transmission.

For the second question, it depends on what is wrong. If the plug fell out, you plug it back in. If the sensor failed it's a bit more complicated. Not enough information to say.

You try too hard.

The problem on those older Rangers and Exploders is that the float that the sending unit uses in the tank is a plastic POS that breaks down. Hence, the "E" reading as the float...stops floating!

You have to replace this and drop the tank to do it.

I did not recall a fuse actually operating the gauge cluster. If nothing works, I would have checked that the connectors in the back are plugged in tight.

Of course, you have to take the cluster out for that.

1. Depends entirely on the weather and type of driving - ranges from about 14 to 19 mpg's. I've heard stories of over 20 mpg's, but that hasn't been my experience.
2. More than likely, you've lost the ground on the tank sending unit due to rust and corrosion. The tank will need to be drop in order to repair it.

u should get approx. 15 18 mpg. on the fuel Gauge the sending unit on the fuel gauge might be the problem there the bad thing is it`s inside the fuel tank it will have to be removed and that`s going to cost probably about 3 hrs. labor @ 60.00 an hrs well u do the math part will be around 30.00 hope this helps

Not sure on the mileage 15-19mpg. The gauge problem could be the sensor in the tank, bad wiring/connections, instrument panel.....it has to be checked.
