How do I clean a greasy halter?

I bought a leather halter on ebay.  The seller said they would clean and oil it for me, which was fine.  When it arrived, it was very sticky to the touch, and along all of the ring and slot connectors there is a very messy gunk jammed all in the leather bits of it all.  The halter is just used for decoration, but I'd at least like to be able to touch it.  You cannot touch this without getting a greasy residue on your hands.

I did not contact the seller about this, as I actually won it almost a year ago and forgot about it until recently. It was only a ten dollar halter and I figured I would just clean it myself.  Any suggestions?  Really hot water to degrease?  Strong detergent soap?

NO hot water!!

Use WD-40 on the hardware and the leather.  Spray on, wipe off the gunk

In a bucket of tepid (tap) water add 1 or 2 TEAspoons of Dawn liquid soap..  Dunk the halter and swish it around for 4 or 5 minutes.

Remove and rinse with the hose.  After it quits dripping, while still wet, apply original formula LEXOL liberally.  Work it in with your hands untill it will not absorb more.  Wipe down with a soft clean cloth.  Let dry, out of the sun, no heaters or blow dryers.  Buff to a patina.

I agree to let it soak in some really hot water with dawn dishwashing liquid and then scrub the byjim out of it and rinse well and hang to dry.
Then go and get some saddle soap and rub it down well and it should be okay. Saddle soap is a great product to use on all leather.

Warm water and castile soap.  Then condition it.

take really hot water and as much off as possible, then take dawn dish soap, wash vary well(i don't know if this will really work but it works on animals that got into like oil and stuff like that) hope it works let me know!

HOT WATER AND COLORSAFE BLEACH, LET IT SIT WITH THE BLEECH, THEN RINSE IT OFF WITH HOT WATER AGAIN!
