When you fill out FAFSA, enter the colleges you want your FAFSA sent to. After your application is processed, the schools you entered will receive these calculations and they'll determine what grants you qualify for, and in return, they'll send you an offer where you can accept or decline the offers.
normally, this is in the summer around july and august, you normally don't receive this until after the federal deadline for financial aid, but if you have a specific school in mind, you can call their financial aid office and they'll be able to give a more specific date.

Once you fill out the FAFSA on www.fafsa.ed.gov, they do the calculations and provide a student aid report (SAR). This tells you how much you qualify to receive. You should be doing this now or all ready have it done.
Colleges then do the calculations and figure out what kind of financial aid package you will receive.... scholarships, work study, PELL grants, students loans, etc, and present this to you in a financial award letter. These usually take place beginning in late March through the first of May.
The faster you complete the FAFSA, the sooner things get started.

Try asking a college that you are enrolled in. If you are not enrolled in one, maybe try calling a local college. My counselor at my school is able to just log onto a site to see what I am eligible for in a matter of minutes. As a freshmen, I got an $1,800 check with interest free loans per semester. I do not think I was considered that "needy," but even so, that is still a lot.

you have to apply first of all, second just go into the admissions office when you do(call first to make sure they have your FAid) then ask what you get. Tell them you re not interested in signing up for classes until you re sure of what you can receive...this may push you back to the next semester but at least you know what you re really going to be getting into, right.

You don't know how much financial aid you will qualify for at a particular school until you have been accepted at that school.
